The award was presented at the Diesel Progress Summit, held Sept. 30 in Louisville, Ky. The Diesel Progress Awards celebrate excellence and achievements in the field of engine and powertrain technology. The Employer of the Year category recognizes a company that has excelled as an employer in areas such as training, apprenticeships, recruitment, diversity and human resources.

In presenting the Employer of the Year award to Volvo Penta, the judges commented: “It is clear that Volvo Penta thinks hard about how to attract and keep its workforce. It looks like a great place to work.”

“Our reputation as a market leader is firmly grounded in our approach to human resources,” said Valerie Harriell, vice president of human resources for Volvo Penta of the Americas. “Engrained into our company’s culture is a high level of trust that drives our decision-making processes and extends to every employee. We encourage communication and cross-functional collaboration that involve employees across all facets of the business.”

The judges cited Volvo Penta’s recruitment and training programs, professional development opportunities, diversity initiatives and off-duty engagement activities as key reasons for the award, and noted the high level of employee job satisfaction.

Earlier this year, Volvo Penta received a Great Place to Work certification from a national organization based on a survey of employees. The survey revealed that 91 percent of employees said that Volvo Penta is a great place to work, stressing the work culture, benefits, people and opportunities offered.

“We attribute our success to cultivating a collaborative culture within our work force. It is a key reason why we attract and retain top talent, launch game-changing products, develop meaningful partnerships and initiate industry leading customer-service programs,” said Ron Huibers, president and CEO of Volvo Penta of the Americas.
