New Volvo Penta D5/D7: Reliable engines for work boats

Volvo Penta continues to broaden its engine program for marine professional applications. The latest additions are the D5 and D7, a series of five- and seven-liter marine diesels for heavy and medium-heavy commercial operation and marine auxiliary systems. The new engines involved a substantial expansion of Volvo Penta’s customer offerings for various types of smaller workboats.
The D5/D7 is a wholly new series of reliable marine diesel engines from Volvo Penta. The engines are finely tuned, with comparatively low RPMs, which, in combination with high torque, make them suitable for displacement and semi-displacement workboats. Each engine also has a number of power outlets for various applications, and is type-approved by the leading international classing societies. D5 is an in-line, four-cylinder engine with a total of 4.76 liters of cylinder volume, and the D7 is an in-line, six-cylinder engine with a total of 7.15 liters of cylinder volume. Both the D5 and the D7 are available in various versions, with turbo or, with turbo and charged-air cooler.

The D5 and D7 are reliable, quiet and economic to operate. A very sturdy basic design, including a stable engine block and over-dimensioned crankshaft bearings provide vibration-free operation.

Economy with uncomplicated service
The new engines have all the prerequisites to ensure overall economy for the boat-owner. Fuel consumption is low due to an efficient fuel system, which, among other features, includes unit injectors for each cylinder, and six-hole injection nozzles that operate under high pressure. Optimal combustion holds exhaust emissions at a low level while fulfilling IMO requirements.

Service and maintenance are simple with accessible servicing points located on the same side of the engine. Wet, replaceable cylinder linings and replaceable valve seats also enable the performance on board of a considerable part of the maintenance work.

Service and support throughout the world
Owners of the new engines have access to qualified service and support from Volvo Penta worldwide. Applications engineers provide support at installation to ensure that the engine operates optimally, with the right type of propeller, etc. Various service programs and rapid access to spare parts promotes reliability, and the avoidance of costly breakdowns.
