Tug 814 “Bakai” is the fifth in the series of tugboats built in Ukraine for local sea trade ports authorities. “Bakai” intended for Kherson Trade Sea Port, the state company responsible for operating in several ports in mouth of river Dnipro and Black sea area. Similar to its four sister ships, Tug “Bakai” can be used for towing, firefighting and can be used as icebreaker as well.
The propulsion engines are dual Volvo Penta D65A MTs, each with 1,380 kW, generating a total bollard pull over of 47 tons and a top speed of 12 knots without tow.
D65A MT, launched in 2000, is Volvo Penta’s 16-cylinder, 65-liter marine diesel engine, equipped with turbo and intercooler. The engine’s maximum capacity is a low 1,650 rpms, which, combined with the powerful torque, gives properties that are highly suitable for tugboats.
“Since these installations were among Volvo Penta’s very first with the D65, we have paid particular attention to customer follow-ups. The first vessels in the series have been in operation for more than a year and we can state that all engines have performed excellently,” says Oleg Perestyuk, General Manager of Volvo Penta in Ukraine.
The generating sets on board the tugboats are driven by dual Volvo Penta TAMD74A units, each with 90 kW, and the fire pump is powered by a 228 kW Volvo Penta TAMD63L.
The Ukrainian customers, who now have a total of five boats with Volvo Penta engines on board, are very pleased with the quality of the engines as well as service and support.
