“We put reliability requirements at the very highest level when the engines and drives were developed without compromising power and performance. The complete sterndrive diesel engine packages are the most cost effective on the market,” says Gerard Törneman, Head of Product Planning for commercial commercial engines at Volvo Penta.
Diesel engines with true high speed potential
With new performance components and optimised turbo, the common-rail engines developed exclusively by Volvo Penta and launched last year have become 20% more powerful. And even the new engines live up to the demands for low emissions and low noise levels. The engine’s design and sturdy engine block, fully-cast cylinder head and a special “ladder frame” as reinforcement at the base result in low vibrations.
Aquamatic with mechanical compressor
The D6-350 DP with its Duoprop drive and 350 hp, is the most powerful diesel sterndrive on the market. The engine is equipped with a mechanical compressor that produces a high charge pressure and thus maximum torque directly from low speeds. This produces very powerful acceleration that kicks the boat up to the planing position.
“The Aquamatic drive with its high efficiency, robust design, power steering and high power, counter rotating propellers made of a nickel, aluminium and bronze alloy, meets the professional users’ stringent requirements,” says Gerard Törneman.
The D6-350 DPR is offered for really high speeds. The new DPR drive, developed specially for speeds between 47 and 60 knots, is identical to the DP version but has a smaller lower housing that is optimised for high speeds and propellers of stainless steel.
The D6-350 as a single installation is a very interesting alternative to petrol driven V8s. The acceleration and cruising speed offered by the D6-350 are on a par with that of a V8 but the fuel consumption is lower, reliability is higher and the service life longer.
370 hp inboard engine
The D6-370 for inboard installation is available with an electronically controlled reverse gear or V-drive. Despite its high power the engine is designed to emit low vibrations and low noise levels. The characteristic diesel knock is eliminated thanks to the common-rail fuel injection.
D4-260 – the most powerful engine in its class.
The new D4-260 is a new variant of the four-cylinder, 210 hp D4 that was launched last year. With its 260 hp the new engine is the most powerful four-cylinder diesel on the market. Common rail direct injection and four-valve technology contribute to the 3.7-litre engine’s high performance. The engine’s compact overall dimensions make it possible to install high power even in confined engine rooms.
The D4-260 is available for inboard installation and with Duoprop drive. The Duoprop version is augmented with turbocharging with a mechanical compressor that provides high torque directly from low engine speeds. The compressor is disengaged at higher speeds and the turbo takes over to deliver high power at cruising speed and top speed.
Very low emissions
Both the D6 and D4 engines will meet the general environmental requirements for Europe and the USA in the coming years. The engines meet Volvo Penta's very stringent requirements on smoke.
It is the advanced and reliable design with common rail injection plus electronic control of all functions in the engine that lies behind the low emission values. The electronics in combination with the fact that the D6 and D4 are state of the art engines, offer very exact operation and full control of the engine’s combustion.
Electronics classified for professional use
The new engines are regulated and monitored by Electronic Vessel Control (EVC), a system that also includes controls and instruments. The complete system facilitates installation by replacing cabling for instruments and controls with a serial data cable.
All the components in EVC have been developed and tested to cope with humidity, vibrations, cold, electric fields and other stresses over a long time. All connections are watertight, the cables are heavy duty and the processors robust and reliable. EVC complies with the strictest classification requirements for professional use.
