Folding propellers offer low resistance under sail but can sometimes exhibit rather dubious thrust during engine operation, particularly when reversing. Volvo Penta’s series of patented folding propellers have been shown in a number of tests to have as much pulling power as a fixed propeller when driving forwards and are 50 percent better than the previous model.
Patented design
The secret behind the propeller’s excellent performance lies in its patented design with elliptical blade profiles and high skew blades. It is a design that traces its origins to submarines where the aim was quiet, efficient and vibration-free operation – properties that are now available to leisure sailors.
For shaft and saildrive
The new two-blade folding propeller is available in a number of different versions for installation on shaft or saildrive. The blades and hub are sold separately, making it easy to put together perfectly matched combinations. With the series of two-, three- and four-blade folding propellers, Volvo Penta now has high-efficiency folding propellers for engines from 7 to 120 hp.
Comprehensive engine range
Volvo Penta has today a very strong range of engines, saildrives, reverse gears and propellers for sailboats. Eight low-revving engine models from 12 to 180 hp ensure high comfort, high power directly from idling speed for simple manoeuvring, and alternators with a minimum output of 115 A.
