Sportsfishing legend launches new category for Volvo Penta IPS

When Volvo Penta IPS takes a step into the Sportsfishing segment, it is not on just any boat. American boat builder Spencer Yachts, with a worldwide reputation in sportsfishing, offers the perfect Sportsfishing yacht with its new 43 footer.
The new Spencer 43 Express, built by Sportsfishing legend and custom builder Paul Spencer, is the first yacht exclusively for sportsfishing equipped with Volvo Penta IPS.

“A lot of our customers have requested a smaller boat, which we were reluctant to do because of the room, the economy of the boat and the fact that it is difficult to get the weight far enough aft. It was just more difficult to build a smaller boat with conventional power,” relates Paul Spencer.

Volvo Penta IPS provides possibilities
Volvo Penta IPS offers totally new possibilities. Earlier this year, Spencer Yachts launched its first boat under 50 feet, the Spencer 43.

“We are extremely satisfied with what we accomplished with Volvo Penta IPS. The engines are now under the cockpit deck which creates a lot of extra space. It’s allowed creation of a 43 foot boat with the living space of a 52 foot boat with two staterooms” says Paul Spencer. “The master stateroom is forward and where there used to be the engine room is now a second stateroom with two large bunks. Yet we get the proper weight distribution and do not sacrifice any of the performance and ride that our boats are known for.”

Cheap on fuel
The efficiency of the Volvo Penta IPS is clearly apparent in the Spencer 43. Fuel consumption is low, despite cruising speed of just over 30 knots.
“The boat has a range of more than 500 nautical miles at 30 knots, which is a good thing now that people want to go and fish a lot of places that are way off shore,” says Paul Spencer.

The boat’s top speed is slightly less than 35 knots and just as in other Spencer yachts it can be driven through rough seas at high speed thanks to its incredible balance and design. .

Easy to dock
The Spencer 43 is equipped with Volvo Penta’s joystick with which the driver can maneuver the boat at low speeds with just one hand.

“I myself was not too excited about the joystick at first, because I am of the old school, and really didn’t think it would do much for me. But after trying it I find myself really liking it and using it more and more, whenever I am maneuvering the boat. It is so simple and so easy to do virtually anything you want to do with the boat. I guess you can teach an old dog new trick!” concludes
Paul Spencer.
