One-year to the start of the Volvo Ocean Race

To mark the countdown to the start of the Volvo Ocean Race, the race office today announces the launch of a new free on-line TV channel. The race creates business opportunities and the unique opportunity to build the Volvo brand.

The start of the Volvo Ocean Race 2008/2009 will go from Alicante, Spain with an in-port race on October 4 – exactly one year from today. The race creates business opportunities and provides a platform for building relationships with existing and potential customers and at the end of the day will help sell products. Moreover the race provides with the unique opportunity to build the Volvo brand by adding new dimensions to the brand such as adventure, excitement, high technology and teamwork.

To mark the one-year countdown to the start, the race office today announces the launch of a new free on-line TV channel allowing enthusiasts to enjoy the drama and history of the great event on their home computers.

The Volvo Ocean Race is regarded as the most prestigious off-shore sailing competition, stretching over a period of 10 months and 39.000 nautical miles and visiting 11 ports. India, Singapore, China and Russia are hosting ports which will be visited for the first time in its history.

The following teams have announced their participation in the
Volvo Ocean Race 2008-2009:

– Ericsson to participate with 2 boats.

– Puma, they will also be the official supplier and official licensee of replica merchandise for the race.

– Spain is entering 2 boats, Alicante 1 & 2 - the main sponsors are yet to be announced.

– Russian Challenge, backed by Oleg Zherebtsov, founder and chairman of Russian hypermarket chain Lenta.
