Volvo Penta’s newly launched OceanX™ sterndrive has been awarded a prestigious Innovation Award at IBEX . The trade association for marine manufacturers, NMMA (National Marine Manufacturers Association), jointly with a jury of boating journalists, selected the OceanX as the best innovation in the engine category.  The award was presented at the Industry Breakfast held at the IBEX marine trade show in Miami on October 14, 2009.

“The judges from BWI were impressed with the corrosion protection drive and the innovative new electronic drive oil and universal joint bellows sensors, proving that once again Volvo Penta leads the industry in technology,” noted Bill Gremminger, lead engineer on the project. “The Ocean X is a complete system to fight the effects of corrosion.  Not only does it apply state of the art materials to fight the corrosive effects of saltwater against the metal drive, but it also includes a water intrusion sensor system designed to warn operators of a problem and provide peace of mind and confidence while on the water.”

“What put the judges over the top,” comments Clint Moore, president and CEO, "was our dedication to improve the overall customers experience and confidence in owning and maintaining a sterndrive.   Our industry is constantly being challenged to reduce the cost of ownership and we thank the IBEX innovation committee for recognizing Volvo Penta’s efforts to help people discover how worry free boating can be.”

The OceanX began production in June, 2009, after four years of extensive testing in the most rigorous conditions, to ensure the ultimate corrosion protection and most durable and technologically advanced system possible.
