The Volvo PL3005D is a modern pipelayer for the modern industry

The new Volvo PL3005D joins the Volvo Construction Equipment line of revolutionary pipelayers. The excavator-based design allows for 360-degree performance, versatility and transportability over traditional pipelayers with a side boom.

Pipelayer - PL3005D Volvo

The patented design of the Volvo PL3005D pipelayer represents a major technological advancement when compared to traditional sideboom dozer based pipelayers. With its excavator-based configuration, the machine offers a 360-degree swing with full lifting performance and functionality at all radius positions — a solution unattainable with conventional sideboom pipelayers.

To increase productivity, the Volvo PL3005D allows for smooth, precise, and efficient load positioning anywhere around the machine, just like an excavator. These pipelayers also feature a mechanical, upper-structure swing lock for use when working on severe grades.

The undercarriage system allows for counter-rotation of the tracks for easy positioning and directional change of the machine. High ground clearance ensures the ability to work in rugged conditions. To ensure a solid footing in most conditions, the 23.6-inch (600 mm) single grouser track pads can be upgraded to 29.5 inches (750 mm) optional single grouser and 31.5 inches (800 mm) optional triple grouser shoes.

More from one machine
One key benefit of the new Volvo PL3005D is the cost-saving versatility of its design. When not being used for pipe laying, the Volvo PL3005D can be converted into a high-production excavator for standard excavation by swapping the boom in a short period of time.

A high-pull planetary winch ensures precise control and smooth lifting. An anti-two-block device automatically prevents the hook and load block from making harsh contact.

Stronger machine, heavier load
The Volvo PL3005D is fitted with a modern onboard load management system (LMS) that uses wireless communication to enable the operator to know what can be safely lifted depending on the angle of the boom, the position of the upper frame relative to the slope, and the incline on which the machine is operating. Load charts are updated constantly for 360-degree rotation and infinite machine positions up to a 35-degree grade slope. Based on these inputs, the LMS determines the unique load chart necessary and displays the safe working load via a graphic display on a monitor in the cab.

Load-indicating light bars, located on both sides at the end of the boom, provide visible warning to the operators of other machines on the jobsite and ground personnel to optimize safety and increase operator efficiency.

Operators come first
The latest generation Volvo Care Cab is fitted to the new Volvo PL3005D. Visibility around the jobsite, inside the trench, and to the load management instrumentation in the cabin is excellent. Side- and rear-mounted video cameras take jobsite visibility to a new level of safe performance and execution.

Operators can breathe easily, thanks to efficient air management and filtering systems for a comfortable, clean, low-noise and vibration work environment. Ergonomically positioned controls are easy to access and can help reduce operator fatigue and improve productivity.

CareTrack telematics as standard
The state-of-the-art CareTrack® telematics system from Volvo Construction Equipment is now standard on all machines 12 tons and over. CareTrack manages a machine’s productivity and maximizes its availability for work. Using a GPRS mobile network or satellite technology, the system reads information on a wide range of machine data, such as location, fuel consumption and service reminders. That data is then made available securely and instantaneously to any remote online connection. In addition, Volvo provides a 3-year CareTrack service subscription at no additional cost in the U.S. and Canada.
