Volvo Construction Equipment’s Americas Headquarters Wins PEDA 2012 Project of the Year

The Pennsylvania Economic Development Association (PEDA) has honored Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE) for expanding its headquarters in an environmental way and for bringing additional manufacturing to the northeast of the United States.

PEDA has selected the new Americas headquarters of Volvo CE in Shippensburg, Pennsylvania, as the recipient of the 2012 Project of the Year award.

Volvo Expansion

PEDA presented Volvo CE with the award during its annual awards lunch at its 2013 Fall Conference at the DoubleTree Hotel in Pittsburgh on October 22.

“One of the main reasons the Volvo CE project was selected as the Project of the Year was due to the company’s demonstrated job creation and retention efforts,” said Joshua Skopp, executive director of PEDA.

PEDA’s Project of the Year recognizes projects completed in the previous year that not only demonstrate job creation and retention but also innovation and creativity, strong partnerships between public and private entities, high regional impact, excellence in site and building design, and sensitivity to the environment.

Volvo CE has added 200 new jobs to the region, on top of the existing 800 already based from its Shippensburg location. In the first quarter of 2013, the company inaugurated the Americas Headquarters and celebrated the start of wheel loader production at the company’s expanded manufacturing facility as part of a $100 million project announced in 2011.

“The project showcases a strong collaboration between the company and the public--plus it’s bringing manufacturing jobs to Pennsylvania,” Skopp said.

Sustainable expansion

With the addition of the new 35,000 square-foot building the expanded offices now serve as the Americas headquarters for both the North and Latin American business of Volvo CE.

“We are honored to win PEDA 2012 Project of the Year,” said Sean Glennon, vice president and general manager, Shippensburg Operations, Volvo CE. “The expansion is our way to signal that Volvo is committed to the key North American market and in a better position than ever before to offer our customers products that are built in America for America.”

The Shippensburg site currently employs more than 1,000 employees from more than 20 countries, working together in operations, technology, sales and marketing, as well as in customer support. The Shippensburg facility also makes more than 50 models of construction equipment, including wheel loaders, soil and asphalt compactors, pavers, motor graders, and milling machines.
