Proven Power, Brought to You by Volvo Penta
(LAS VEGAS, Nev.) – March 5, 2014 – Volvo Penta hits ConExpo 2014 to promote its full range of industrial engines and worldwide customer support.

Volvo Penta offers Tier 4 Final emissions-compliant 143- to 700-horsepower engines. These engines come in 5-, 8-, 11-, 13- and 16-liter displacements and are suited to a host of off-road applications, including material handling, construction, quarrying, mining and agriculture. For power generation, Volvo Penta also offers a complete line of Tier 3-compliant engines, ranging from 96 kVA to 687 kVA on prime power. Volvo Penta is displaying its D8, D11 and D13 off-road engines at ConExpo — with the eight-liter engine making its US debut at the show.

An advanced Tier 4 Final solution

The stand, located in the engine area of South Hall 4 at Booth 83830, will also showcase Volvo Penta’s selective catalytic reduction (SCR) Tier 4 Final technology. The system perfoms without regeneration or a diesel particulate filter — commonly used aftertreatment systems that can increase maintenance and, ultimately require replacement — making it a simpler, more versatile and less costly option for customers.

To meet Tier 4 Final emissions legislation requirements, Volvo Penta simply redesigned the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) technology already installed in its Tier 4 Interim engines. With SCR technology, AdBlue™ is injected into the exhaust line and reacts with harmful nitrogen oxide (NOx) in the catalytic converter to become nitrogen and water. Since NOx is created at high temperatures, a light exhaust gas recirculation (light EGR) further contributes to reducing NOx by lowering the engine’s peak combustion temperature.

Volvo Penta is also investing R&D muscle into new features that can help operators use their machines more efficiently. A new start/stop function on 5- and 7-liter Tier 4 Interim units shuts down the engine during extended idle periods and turns it back on when the operator presses a pedal or pulls a lever. The feature reduces fuel consumption, as well as emissions and noise.

Volvo Group strength

In addition to Volvo Penta, Volvo Group sister companies Volvo Construction Equipment, Volvo Trucks and Mack Trucks will also exhibit at ConExpo. The presence of all four companies at the show highlights the strength of the Volvo Group and underscores Volvo Penta’s synergies with its fellow Volvo businesses. To further reinforce their compatibility, Volvo Construction Equipment will also display a Volvo Penta TAD734GE-powered genset on its stand. The genset, developed in partnership with Tradewinds, was featured on the Guyana worksite of the Discovery Channel reality series “Gold Rush.”
