Volvo Penta, the jewel in the Azimut 77S crown

With Italian boat builder Azimut’s sports line aiming to be top of its class, the 77S contains all the features of an ultra-modern super yacht — including Volvo Penta IPS. Azimut and Volvo Penta will both be attending the Cannes Yachting Festival from 9-14 September.

Since the launch of the Azimut 55S, the boating world has been holding its breath in anticipation for the launch of the 77S: a larger boat packed with many cutting-edge features, including Volvo Penta IPS.

“Innovation for the sake of beauty”
The 77-foot Azimut 77S – along with its counterpart the 55S – arrives as part of the shipyard’s wider product development strategy, which focuses on using state-of-the-art technology and design to gain a competitive edge.

Part of this strategy has been to equip the boat with a triple Volvo Penta IPS 1200 engine installation, a key benefit of which was the extra space afforded to designers. The triple installation transforms the engine room into a well-organized, compact area that leaves more room for the features that matter most to customers.

Maximum ease of handling and precision maneuverability have long been key features of Volvo Penta’s IPS, as has the system’s impressive fuel efficiency. The model also has a specially designed hull, offering superior performance at the cruise speed of 32 knots, where approximate fuel efficiency is 420 l/h.

An ideal partnership
“This latest partnership with Azimut marks a new age for Volvo Penta IPS,” explains Nicola Pomi, head of market unit Italy. “Within the leisure boat segment, Volvo Penta has historically only supplied engines for boats extending up to 50 feet in length.

“Supplying an engine solution to shipyards such as Azimut allows Volvo Penta to open up a dialogue with similar boat builders, paving the way for Volvo Penta to play a more competitive role within the yacht segment.”

“After the success of the Azimut 55S, we are pleased to confirm that Volvo Penta is our strategic supplier for the Azimut 77S,” says Alessandro Rossi, chief technical officer for Azimut Yachts. “The integrated hull, propulsion and layout allowed designers to maximize efficiency and space afforded to them by the yacht’s pod propulsion system.

“Thanks to a strong relationship between Azimut R&D and Volvo Penta engineers, the standards of style, comfort and consumption have been dramatically improved in comparison to earlier models.”

Volvo Penta has almost ten years of experience in supplying Volvo Penta IPS to both Marine Leisure and Marine Commercial segments; the Azimut 77S, however, was a landmark installation. In the past Volvo Penta’s diesel engines and IPS transmission systems have only been applied to custom-built yachts. This latest order, however, sees Volvo Penta IPS being applied to production line boats, a trend Nicola hopes will continue.

“This is a great step forward for Volvo Penta. We are becoming recognized globally as an innovative company that can provide cutting-edge technology on a large scale.”
