Volvo Penta’s eight-liter engine will be on display at SMM Hamburg.
The 8-liter engine is based on the latest Volvo Penta technology and is designed for applications that require low weight with high power in order to achieve peak performance. It is ideal for use in planing craft which need to accelerate quickly, with low emissions and high comfort. Commercial uses include fast patrols, coastguard and rescue launches, police and ambulance boats, pilot boats, water-taxis and high-speed passenger ferries, fishing boats, and off-shore support vessels.
“This new engine is a compelling development for us and we’re excited to be showing it to the public for the first time at SMM,” says Thomas Lantz, product planning manager for Volvo Penta’s Marine Commercial sector.
“The D8 complements the six and 11-liter high performance engines we produce. Due to its compact design and high power-to-weight ratio, it will fit extremely well into high speed planning vessels in both newly designed boats and those which are being re-powered from Volvo Penta’s famous TAMD74 engines.”
The D8 is an in-line six-cylinder engine with a cylinder capacity of 7.7 liters, twin-entry turbo and sea-water cooled heat exchanger. It has a common rail system working up to 2000bars and has a high power to weight ratio, offering excellent torque and fuel efficiency, and low noise and emissions. Volvo Penta has developed three power outputs for the D8 inboard range – of 450, 510 and 550hp. They are designed to conform to the US EPA Tier 3 emissions standards, as well as IMO II and EU IWW. EPA certificates are expected in January 2017.
World class performance
Volvo Penta’s latest Inboard Performance System – IPS15 – has been optimized to fit comprehensively with the new D8 engine, to provide a complete package that offers world class fuel efficiency, excellent maneuverability and high performance. The package has three power settings: D8-IPS600, D8-IPS650 and D8-IPS700. The package has been designed to conform to US EPA Tier 3 emissions. The D8 IPS models will be available for delivery in May 2017.
Additional technology on display
Further advancements in marine technology from Volvo Penta will be on display at SMM Hamburg, including the 13-liter genset, a 16 liter inboard engine and a 6-liter 400hp aquamatic sterndrive. Visitors to Volvo Penta’s stand can also find out more about a new online tool, which makes it easier for customers in the genset market to select the ideal engine.
Earlier this year, Volvo Penta became the majority shareholder of innovative marine technology provider, Humphree, to move towards becoming a full marine system supplier. The strategic alliance enables Volvo Penta to extend its range of boat dynamics solutions with new trim and stabilization functions; and Humphree is able to broaden its client base. The companies will also collaborate to pursue cutting-edge solutions for a wide range of marine vessels, such as active ride control.
Volvo Penta will be in Hall A3 at stand 415 at SMM, Hamburg, from September 6-9, and will be joined at the stand by Humphree.
