Evergreen Waste Services, based in Hockessin, Delaware, recently ordered a Mack® LR Electric refuse vehicle, the first electric vehicle in the company’s fleet. The vehicle will operate in a residential area in New Castle County, Delaware.

“Mack Trucks is excited that Evergreen Waste Services chose a Mack LR Electric refuse vehicle as the first electric truck in its fleet,” said Jonathan Randall, president of Mack Trucks North America. “Mack is well-known in the industry for leading technological advances, and electrification is no different. We continue to be focused on providing zero-emissions vehicles that benefit our customers and the environment.”

Marcus Stevens, president of Evergreen Waste, said Evergreen wanted to support the adoption of electrification and the move toward renewable energy, which is why the company chose to order an electric refuse truck. The Mack LR Electric will be delivered in the summer of 2023.

“We didn’t want to compromise service, reliability or capacity on route,” Stevens said. “We’re looking forward the Mack LR Electric and Mack Trucks delivering in all of these areas, and we believe they will.”

Evergreen’s Mack LR Electric truck, which will be a rear loader, will operate in a residential setting, with a goal of collecting from about 700 stops per day. Evergreen currently has 42 vehicles in its fleet, 37 of which are Mack trucks.

The next generation Mack LR Electric offers a standard 376 kWh total battery capacity for 42 percent more energy and increased range between vehicle charges. Twin electric motors produce 448 continuous horsepower and 4,051 lb.-ft. of peak torque output from zero RPM.

Four NMC (Nickel Manganese Cobalt Oxide) lithium-ion batteries, charged through a 150 kW, SAE J1772-compliant charging system, power the vehicle and all onboard accessories through 12V, 24V and 600V circuits. The two-stage regenerative braking system helps recapture energy from the hundreds of stops the vehicle makes each day with an increasing load.

Bergey’s Truck Center in New Castle, Delaware, will service and support Evergreen’s Mack LR Electric vehicle.
