Low-carbon transportation is driving change

Emission reduction continues to play a vital role in product and service development across the transportation industry.
Cespira

At Volvo Group we are investing heavily in technologies that can make an immediate and lasting impact. Our joint venture with Westport Fuel Systems, Cespira, is a great example of this.

In September 2024, Volvo Group and Westport Fuel Systems signed a deal to create the joint venture Cespira, to bring low-carbon powertrain solutions to the market. Using high-pressure direct injection (HPDI™), Cespira’s technology enables internal combustion engines to run on carbon neutral fuels such as biomethane, e-methane or green hydrogen, while offering the range, performance, and drivability of a traditionally diesel-powered engine.

The beauty of Cespira’s solution lies in its ability to maintain the maximum commonality with conventional engines, removing the need for completely new powertrain solutions.

Electronic control

HPDI consists of fully integrated on and off engine fuel system components and an electronic control system. Central to this is the HPDI fuel injector which delivers the gas, stored in a cryogenic tank on the truck chassis to the engine’s fuel injectors via high pressure fuel rails. The system is proven for LNG and is now Hydrogen ready, offering transport companies an immediate and cost-efficient way to reduce emissions while lowering operating costs and exceeding the performance of current heavy duty diesel-powered vehicles.

With an already existing network of biogas and LNG fueling stations across the globe, HPDI technology represents an immediate and effective solution for businesses tasked with reducing their emission levels in line with government regulations and is already available from Volvo Trucks for LNG applications.

As the adoption of hydrogen gas as a truck fuel increases, thanks to recent advances in production techniques, Cespira’s solutions offer a highly attractive alternative for transportation companies proves that combustion engines can still deliver the goods both on and off the road while reducing emissions.
