The award is given by CIVITAS, an international network gathers European cities and decision makers.

The motivation for ElectriCity receiving the award in the category Transformation:
” City of Gothenburg made a great step forward with ElectriCity – a cooperative venture that brought together industry, research and society in development of a complex (next generation sustainable public transport) solution with several positive impacts – reduction of air pollution and noise, including social and urban planning impact. Gothenburg set a new definition for accessibility of public transport.”

Transformations is a new category created this year to highlight exceptional city transformation in sustainable urban development.

Volvo Buses electric bus on route 55 is a result of the ElectriCity cooperation. The quiet, emission-free buses and the technology developed for safety, comfort and sustainability changes the possibilities for urban planning. For example, indoor bus stops can be incorporated into building structures and changes the city landscape. The new buses could allow for time tables to be extended later at nights and buses could run closer into residential areas.

CIVITAS was founded in 2002. The network work to create clean and energy efficient transport systems in the development of sustainable cities in Europe.
