On behalf of all its employees, the Volvo Group makes an annual donation to charity. Through the Volvo Group Seasonal Gift 2018, seven projects have received funding from the Volvo Group in the name of its employees. The projects in China and Russia are just two examples of seasonal gifts in 2018.
Completely new canteen
The Volvo Chenglang Hope School is located in a mountainous area and provides an education for students from 18 surrounding rural villages. Around 40 of the 200 students live too far from the school to go home for lunch. There was no indoor dining area in the old kitchen and the students had to take food out into the playground even in cold winter weather.
With the Seasonal Gift funding from the Volvo Group, Volvo Group China has built a completely new canteen for the school, covering an area of 80 square metres and equipped with modern cooking facilities, a disinfection unit and an indoor dining area. From the start of the new term, students will be able to enjoy lunch in the new bright and clean canteen.
Support for the Kaluga orphanage
In 2009, Volvo Group Russia established a truck plant in Kaluga, which is 180 kilometres from Moscow. Since then the company has been gradually expanding its charity scheme by supporting the Kaluga orphanage, which is home to more than 50 children between 9 and 17 years of age. The company is also supporting the Kaluga youth hockey team as part of its commitment to the region where Volvo is a local manufacturer.
Since the refurbishment of the sports hall was completed in 2018, bedrooms, a nearby corridor and a road safety classroom have also been renovated. The renovation work was finished just before the start of the new school year. The next phase of the refurbishment of the Kaluga orphanage is currently under discussion with the local authorities. Work is expected to start later this year and continue into 2020.
