How corporate and startup collaboration made compliance a smooth ride for truckers

Collaborating with startups that have advanced and innovative technologies can be highly successful for large corporates like Volvo Group. One of Volvo Group’s core business areas, Volvo Trucks, did just this when tapping into a startup’s technology and agile pace. Volvo Trucks addressed an urgent customer need and delivered a valuable solution that directly supported customers’ operations.

Using startup speed for urgent customer need

In December 2024, a new regulatory requirement was introduced in Poland related to SENT (System for Electronic Transport Supervision) for tracking specific goods transported within the country. As the regulation took effect, Volvo Trucks’ customers began requesting an intuitive feature that would help them comply quickly and without operational disruption. Delivering a timely and accessible solution was therefore crucial—not only to support operators facing new administrative demands but also to ensure that they could be compliant with minimal friction.

Annelie Norhav, Services Partnership Manager at Volvo Trucks, quickly scoped a project with the startup AiDEN, whose technology and service platform aligned well with Volvo Trucks’ needs in this customer challenge. By leveraging CampX—Volvo Group’s innovation arena for collaborating with partners—the project could be kicked off quickly and effectively, using streamlined agreements and internal processes tailored for working with startups.

Turning regulatory challenges into smooth rides for truckers
The service developed by AiDEN in collaboration with Volvo Trucks and the end customer includes a driver app integrated into the cab’s side display, as well as an interface embedded in Volvo Connect*. It provides valuable support to the driver and the fleet manager. With this service, truck drivers can now comply with regulations without needing additional hardware or relying on their personal mobile phones.

“Volvo Group’s expertise in combination with the startup’s agility, together with the close collaboration with the customer, made fast, high-quality development-to-market possible. This truly came from doing it together. Colleagues across the Volvo Group have all contributed and supported throughout the journey, navigating the challenge of operating outside the standard processes,” says Annelie Norhav.

For a large company like Volvo Group, being able to work with startups—such as AiDEN in this case—is very valuable. This project demonstrates that it is fully possible to build and commercialize services based on customer needs by leveraging the speed and flexibility of a startup.

Petro Kutsyi

Petro Kutsyi, Product Engineer at Volvo Trucks, has been in close contact with the customer Gorizont-SM that participated in testing the service. “The new service is very convenient for the driver and administrator at the same time and Gorizont-SM was very pleased with the quick response from Volvo Group on this request. We have gone from the almost impossible in the fall of 2024 to the implementation of pilot sales in the fall of 2025.”

What happens next
Customer tests have been completed, and the service is available for sale in the pilot markets. The next step is to begin development of the e-Trans service to comply with Romanian legislation. In parallel, we will continue to enhance the service based on continuous customer feedback.
