Hybrid vehicle control benchmark
Within Volvo Group Trucks Technology, the Powertrain Strategic Development department drives the development of new innovative powertrains for the trucks of the next decade. It is a global unit with the the main site at Chalmers Technology Park in Gothenburg.
One of the main challenges to address is connected to the new CO2 regulation for trucks which was decided in the European parliament this year. This regulation push the manufacturers to decrease the CO2 emission of the new trucks by 30% from 2019 up to 2030. One of the solutions to answer this unprecedented challenge is to recover brake energy by hybridizing the truck powertrain with 48 V or 600 V electrical machines and batteries. The control of this hybrid powertrain is key to maximize the fuel saving. It uses the knowledge of the profile of the road ahead thanks to GPS and maps, and strongly interacts with the existing control of the cruise speed and automated gear shifts.
The purpose of this master thesis work is to perform a literature review on existing strategies (rule based, dynamic programming, predictive...), and compare them with several in-house possible one with Volvo's Matlab based vehicle simulation software on customer representative duty cycles. The conclusion of this benchmark will then be used to establish recommendations to make the Volvo strategy even more fuel efficient and robust to various road profiles. T
