Design of Swappable Battery Pack for Construction Machines

About us:

Volvo Construction Equipment, a business area within the Volvo Group, is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of construction equipment such as wheel loaders, excavators, articulated haulers, road development equipment and compact equipment. Facilities are located in Europe, Asia, North America and Latin America. Please read more about us at our homepage.

Description:

This master thesis proposal focuses on the design of a swappable battery pack suitable for various construction machines. The primary objective is to design a versatile battery pack capable of accommodating the requirements of different product categories such as excavators, wheel loaders, and haulers. The work will cover installation in CAD, design of the electronic topology and interconnection of the different subsystems and components such as battery modules, connectors, thermal management system and isolation resistance monitoring.

Activities will include:
  • Conduct a review of existing literature, patents, and industry standards
  • Gather requirements for performance, functional safety, and electrical safety. This includes specifying the desired power output, energy capacity, operational conditions, and relevant safety standards.
  • Analysis of form factors to match the requirements of different product categories and identify commonalities and differences. Develop a form factor that supports modular installation and connection.
  • Evaluate various battery module and cell technologies based on energy density, power output, and safety. Choose the most suitable option for modular installation and connection.
  • Develop the electric topology for the battery pack, including how modules are connected and how power is distributed within the pack.
  • Design machine-battery connectors and charging connectors to ensure secure, reliable, and safe connections during module installation. Incorporate known quick-connect methods into the design.
