What did you do at your summer job?

I’ve spent the summer at Volvo Group’s technology and product development organization for trucks. Throughout the summer, I’ve developed the software that Volvo Group uses to analyze test data. To understand what problems to solve, we made a lot of research and interviewed people at Volvo Group who work with the software on a regular basis. However, the main part of the job was programming.

The software is an important tool to identify needs for adjustments on an early stage in the product development process. I’ve really enjoyed working with something that’s used on a day-to-day basis and has a large impact on the product development process.

Why did you want to work at Volvo Group?

I’ve been interested in this branch of industry for a while, and I’ve had Volvo Group in mind. I’m passionate about new technology, and I believe that sustainability is very important. Our modern way of life demands smarter and more sustainable logistics and transportation solutions. I knew that Volvo Group is working within these areas, and I wanted to be a part of it.

What are your most important experiences?

The most important thing I’ve learned is to never be afraid of asking questions. There is always someone that is willing to help! Also, I’ve made a lot of valuable contacts within Volvo Group.

Of course, working in a developing project like this is a great experience. As opposed to projects I’ve worked with at the university, it’s not just about finishing on time. It’s the process, everything that happens along the way that counts.

Do you have any advice for anyone seeking a summer job at Volvo Group?

I’d say, find out as much as you can about the jobs that you’re interested in, and also about the application process. I talked to people from Volvo Group at a job fair and asked all my questions. I believe it’s important to be clear about what you enjoy doing – and what you want to work with – in order to get a summer job that’s relevant for you and your education. I’ll graduate next year, and after this summer I have a much clearer picture of what I want to do in the future.
