Better comfort with Volvo Penta 16 liter diesel engine

Volvo Penta’s 16-liter diesel engines are being increasingly installed as propulsion engines in commercial vessels, particularly in the fishing industry. For owners, this means lower fuel consumption and better onboard comfort.
One of the most recent examples is the newly built Toya shrimp trawler, based in the Norwegian port of Karmöy. The ship has an efficient hull that combined with Volvo Penta’s 16-liter engine delivers flexible and comfortable operations.
“Toya’s foreship has a sharp V shape and a flat bottom astern. This ensures smooth sailing in high seas while the water stream around the propeller is efficient. The propeller has a diameter of a full 1.4 meters, which further contributes to a high efficiency,” says Arne Bakke at Sawicon, the company responsible for the design and work drawings, as well as consultancy during construction.
The hull for the Toya was built in the Czech Republic at the Ceske Lodenice shipyard, which also installed the engine and fitted parts of the equipment onboard. The vessel arrived at Karmöy in May 2003, where the final equipment fitting was completed prior to the vessel being placed in operation in the autumn.
