Business focus at Volvo Ocean Race in Miami

While the world’s best sailors endure a 9 month, 39,000 nautical mile journey across the planet’s most treacherous oceans – Volvo Construction Equipment will use the race’s Miami stopover to strengthen the Volvo brand with existing customers and develop relationships with new customers.

The Volvo Ocean Race stopover in Miami, Florida provides a magnificent backdrop for Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE) to profile its products and commitment to its core values: Quality, Safety and Environmental Care. The company will take the opportunity to gather all its American distribution partners for its annual dealer conference. Many current and potential construction customers will also attend. Volvo Group CEO Olof Persson and Volvo Construction Equipment President Pat Olney will attend a number of the events during the race.

Means to an end

President of Region Americas Göran Lindgren states “The Volvo Ocean Race serves as an excellent platform for the company to spend one-on-one time with important customers and potential customers to talk about what they need in their operations and how Volvo can meet those needs. We also took the opportunity to gather our distribution partners to plan future business objectives.”

At a press event during the event, being held under the theme of sustainability, the company will release the latest details of its ongoing $100 million investment to expand its existing production facilities in the United States as well as the latest developments in its North American and global operations.

Showing the brand
The first leg of the 2011-2012 Volvo Ocean Race got underway in Alicante, Spain in October 2011. This is the third time in four races the boats have stopped over in the United States for the prestigious round-the-world sailing race under the Volvo flag. Six boats representing 15 nations will compete to cross the finishing line first in Galway, Ireland in July 2012.

More than four million guests and general spectators are estimated to pass through the Race Village at the stopovers. Each of the 10 stopovers represents a major event. All of the visitors encounter the Volvo brand. At each stopover, there is a large Volvo Pavilion with a brand and product exhibition where customers, potential customers and members of the public can find out more about the race, as well as about the products and services of Volvo Construction Equipment and other Volvo Group companies.

Seen, read and heard

The last run of the Volvo Ocean Race was in 2008-09 and broadcast to an audience of 1.3 billion viewers. ‘Volvo’ was mentioned 28,900 times in at least 13,000 articles published about the Race in at least 15 different countries – reaching a further 1.6 billion readers. There were more than four million unique visitors to the Volvo Ocean Race website. That interest is only expected to be higher for the current race. The coverage offers incalculable media exposure for Volvo.
