(CHESAPEAKE, Va.) – Feb. 2, 2015 – The first new Slane 62 convertible, which is under construction at Slane Marine’s boatyard in High Point, N.C., will be powered by twin Volvo Penta IPS3 steerable drive units.
“The 62 will be one of the most fuel-efficient sportfishing boats in its class ever built,” said Tom Slane, founder and president of Slane Marine. “The twin Volvo Penta D13 diesels and IPS3 pod drives with counter-rotating props, when mated with the 62’s optimized Carolina hull form, will result in fuel savings of up to 52 percent, compared with a traditional inboard.”
“The Volvo Penta IPS will also provide unparalleled maneuverability and virtually eliminate noise, vibration and exhaust fumes in the cockpit – important considerations in a sportfishing yacht,” Slane added. “In addition, the space-saving IPS design allows us to build the 62 with an unprecedented 185 sq. ft. cockpit, plus nearly 30 percent more area in the lower accommodation plan.”
The Slane 62 includes all the essentials of Carolina styling – a sweeping sheer that breaks at the aft end of the house, a high, well-raked bow with a generous and fully-functional flying bridge that offers perfect sightlines. It also boasts four spacious staterooms and three heads, with the salon and galley offered in a choice of layouts and finished to the owner’s specifications.

One of the most innovative new features on the Slane 62 comes from Slane Marine’s vast range of experience in rebuilding and modifying older cruising, express and fishing boats over the last 30 years. Slane’s design incorporates a removable mezzanine between the cockpit and engine room, which will allow major maintenance or removal of the engines or generators to be carried out quickly and with reduced labor costs. This will enable engine replacement in a matter of days instead of months, helping to keep the boat in service during the critical tournament season.
