Together for safety

From the three-point seat belt to the energy absorbing safety cab, Volvo Group has contributed to safer roads for decades. Moving into the future, connectivity and big data are important parts in identifying and developing new safety features. Working with the safety of tomorrow is a task with almost infinite variables.

For example, vehicles could communicate with each other through connectivity. If a truck encounters ice on the road, it can inform other connected vehicles nearby. Volvo Trucks is working together with Volvo Cars in order to learn how communication between assets of different brands and models could work.

Finding partners for the future is essential. Just imagine the possibilities of a system that connects and makes use of information not only from vehicles, but from other connected sources such as traffic flows, emergency services, parking spaces and stop lights.

One solution that Volvo Buses already work with is Zone Management. Geofencing makes it possible to create zones with applied recommendations, rules or restrictions to vehicles. This solution allows a municipal administration or a city to regulate noise levels, emissions and speed, for example outside schools or in city centers. By defining low speed zones, it is possible to ensure that drivers are always aware of the current limit, and it is also possible to actively control the speed of the vehicle.

Zone Management is a glimpse of what safety solutions for the future can look like. We are at the beginning of a new exciting era. The Volvo Group is proud to continue the pursuit for even safer solutions.
