With the new six-cylinder D12 engine, Volvo Penta broadens and strengthens its product programme in the important industrial engine segment. Earlier, Volvo Penta introduced the marine version of the D12, which has been well-received on the market.
The industrial version of the D12 represents a major technical advance for Volvo Penta. The D12 is a combination of high output and low emission levels in a highly compact engine. Fuel consumption is 6 percent lower than the engines that the D12 replaces.
The biggest news with the D12 engine is the EMS (Engine Management System) control system that facilitates sharply improved control of the engine’s operations and performance. In addition, the system is also designed for total integration with the machine or equipment the engine is driving.
“We can deliver D12 engines as a component of our customers’ systems, either partly integrated or free standing. When installed as an integral component of the machine, the electronic control system communicates with all types of equipment, sensors, and instruments,” says Urban Larsson, technical project leader.
EMS is fast and accurate. The engine responds immediately to changes in engine load, which is a highly important factor in power supply applications. Each cylinder is monitored separately and, since the D12 series uses unit injectors, each cylinder can be controlled separately. Any faults or functional disturbance is corrected for each cylinder, so that the mechanic can test each cylinder independently.
“EMS also makes it possible to adapt the engines' performance to specific applications with great precision. We can deliver engine performance that is tailored to each specification, which means better performance and improved fuel economy,” continues Urban Larsson.
The new D12 series contains engines for all types of industrial applications. The TWD1240 VE is used in mobile applications, such as forklift trucks, container lifters and agricultural machinery. They are also suitable for certain stationary applications, primary as pumps, as well as stone crushers, conveyors and similar applications. The TWD is turbocharged and is water-to-air intercooled, which ensures a steady engine temperature and an installation that is less sensitive to dirty environments
The three models for power supply: TAD1240, 1241 and 1242 GE are all turbocharged and air-to-air intercooled. Maximum standby power is 398kW/50 Hz and 449kW/60Hz.
Efficient combustion is fundamental creating an effective engine with high output and low emissions. The D12 features six unit injectors, one for each cylinder. Fuel is injected at very high pressures, of up to 1,800 bars, through a five-hole injector that ensures an efficient mix of fuel and air. The unit injectors and EMS make it possible to control fuel injection with extremely high precision.
The engine has high service intervals and it is also possible to carry out certain service actions while the engine is operating.
