The newly ordered pilot boats are 15 meters in length, constructed in fiberglass and equipped with dual Volvo Penta TAMD74C EDC engines, each with an output of 430 horsepower. This gives the boats a cruising speed of 22 knots, enabling them to move rapidly among the different harbours. The engines are state-of-the-art 7-liter marine diesels with turbochargers and electronic diesel control (EDC). EDC makes it possible to combine high power with low exhaust emissions and extremely high operating reliability.
The customer for the pilot boats is PT (Persero) Pelabuhan Indonesia, one of the harbour authorities in the Riau Archipelago. The initial order covers four boats, scheduled for complete delivery by the end of 2002. Volvo Penta also has an option on an additional four boats, with delivery later in 2003.
