Volvo Penta launches new 9-liter industrial engine with electronic control system

Fuel-efficient, compact and powerful. Volvo Penta’s new 9-liter engine for processing machines, special vehicles and electrical power generation represents many technological advances. The foremost of these is EMS 2 – an entirely new electronic control system that optimizes both performance as well as fuel-efficiency and also enables the engine to be easily integrated with other machine electronics.

The new engine has a displacement of 9.4 liters and comes in four versions: TAD940VE, TAD941VE, TAD942VE and TAD943VE with power outputs ranging between 190 and 280 kW.  News of these new engines was announced at the Bauma industry trade show in Munich, which opened on March 29, 2004.

A compact powerful package
Compared to its predecessor, the TWD1031VE, the new 9-liter engine delivers up to 22% more torque and 20% more power.  With significant power output already at low rpms and with a maximum torque of an impressive 1,700 Nm (between approximately 1,150 – 1,550 rpms) the new engine offers power on par with larger engines.

Despite its increased capacity, the new engine is more compact than its predecessor, and its external height dimension has been reduced by 195 mm.

Fuel-efficient and environmentally certified
Improved fuel efficiency and more complete combustion are two reasons for this higher capacity.  An injection pressure of up to 2,000 bar creates the requisite environment for optimal fuel combustion and results not only in lower fuel consumption, but also lower nitrogen oxide and particle emissions.

TAD940VE, TAD941VE, TAD942VE and TAD943VE fulfill all existing emissions requirements, and the new technology will allow for adaptations to meet future legislation.

Advanced electronic control system
One of the factors behind the new engine’s excellent performance is the Engine Monitoring System 2 (EMS 2), a new electronic control system for diesel engines developed by Volvo Penta.

The system monitors and regulates a large number of components within the engine.  For example, the engine’s fuel needs are analyzed up to 100 times per second.  By controlling injection levels and timing through fuel valves in the unit injectors, the engine always receives the amount of fuel that operating conditions demand.  The result is lower fuel consumption and cleaner exhaust emissions, as well as a more responsive engine at increased loads.

The advanced electronics make the engine an intelligent part of the machine in which it is installed, and enables manufacturers to integrate all electronics into one unified system.

Simplified installation and greater choice
The new engine offers four different placement alternatives for the turbo compressor.  The oil pan can handle up to a 30-degree pitch and can be rotated 180 degrees in order to fit various kinds of installations.

Moreover, alternative placements are offered for the oil and fuel filters, which means that they can be placed in locations that are easiest to reach once the engine has been installed.

For stationary applications, the engine can be delivered in the Powerpac configuration, complete with frame and mounted radiator and charge-air cooler.

Fast and simple engine diagnosis using VODIA
The new 9-liter engine can – like all of Volvo Penta’s electronically controlled engines – be connected to VODIA.  VODIA is an easy-to-use service tool for testing, troubleshooting and diagnosis, and it fits in a pocket.  VODIA can also be used to adjust numerous parameters within the engine.
