In simplified terms, the new system features propellers that are turned in the direction in which the boat is traveling. Volvo Penta has placed pulling and counter-rotating propellers through the bottom of the hull, which provides the boat with significantly improved performance, compared with traditional shaft installations.
According to Volvo Penta’s own calculations, the higher efficiency of the new system provides the following improvements compared with boats that are equipped with shaft installations:
* 20% faster
* 15% greater acceleration
* 50% lower noise and vibration levels
* 75% faster to install
* Dramatically easier handling
“During the development work and the continuous tests that we perform, the system has exceeded our expectations time and time again. Boat performance is boosted to a new level, compared with before,” says Volvo Penta President Göran Gummeson.
The world’s leading boat builders have been invited to follow the development of the Volvo Penta IPS at close hand, and they have also been given opportunities to test prototypes of the new system in boats.
The reactions gained have been uniformly positive. Consequently, most of the world’s best-known boat brands are planning to launch boats featuring the Volvo Penta IPS, the first of which will be on view in conjunction with this winter’s international boat shows in London, Düsseldorf and Miami.
Volvo Penta IPS will revolutionize boat life in much the same way as another important Volvo Penta invention, the Aquamatic sterndrive, which was introduced toward the end of the 1950s.
“However, the Volvo Penta IPS will not compete with sterndrive installations. Instead, we shall be focusing on taking share in segments of the market for traditional shaft installations,” says Göran Gummeson.
Shaft installations of this type clearly restrict the boat’s performance, comfort, maneuverability and environmental properties.
Volvo Penta IPS will now be launched in two versions: IPS 400 and IPS 500, both of which are based on Volvo Penta’s proprietary developed diesel engines D6-310 and D6-370. The system in these output classes is appropriate for boats ranging from 35-50 feet in size.

Ny teknik som revolutionerar båtlivet
Volvo Penta lanserar nu ett helt nytt framdrivningssystem för båtar - Volvo Penta IPS (Inboard Performance System)
Det nya systemet gör båtarna snabbare, starkare, tystare, renare och lika enkla att manövrera som en vanlig personbil.
Lite förenklat kan det nya systemet beskrivas som att propellrarna vänts i båtens färdriktning. Volvo Penta har placerat dragande och motroterande propellrar genom skrovets botten, vilket ger båten avsevärt bättre egenskaper än vad traditionella axelinstallationer ger.
Tack vare den högre effektiviteten ger det nya IPS-systemet, enligt Volvo Pentas beräkningar, följande förbättringar i jämförelse med båtar utrustade med axelinstallationer:
* 20 procent snabbare
* 30 procent bränslesnålare
* 15 procent bättre acceleration
* 50 procent lägre ljudnivåer och vibrationer
* 75 procent snabbare installation
* Dramatiskt enklare manövrering
"Under utvecklingsarbetet och våra fortlöpande tester har systemet gång på gång överträffat våra förväntningar. Båtens egenskaper lyfts till helt nya nivåer jämfört med tidigare", säger Volvo Pentas VD Göran Gummeson.
Världens stora båttillverkare har på nära håll kunnat följa utvecklingsarbetet av Volvo Penta IPS och även givits tillfälle att regelbundet testa prototyper i båt.
Reaktionerna har varit samstämmigt positiva och de flesta av världens mest kända båttillverkare kommer i år att lansera båtmodeller utrustade med Volvo Penta IPS.
De första båtarna visas i samband med vinterns internationella båtmässor i London, Düsseldorf och Miami, men även i Göteborg och i Stockholm.
Volvo Penta IPS kommer att innebära en lika genomgripande förändring av båtlivet som en annan viktig innovation av Volvo Penta, Aqumaticdrevet, som lanserades i slutet av 1950-talet.
"Volvo Penta IPS kommer dock inte att konkurrera med motorer i drevutförande, utan vi inriktar
oss på att erövra andelar av marknaden för traditionella axelinstallationer", säger Göran Gummeson.
Denna typ av axelinstallationer har inneburit klara begränsningar vad avser båtens prestanda, komfort, manöverbarhet och miljöegenskaper.
Volvo Penta IPS lanseras nu i två utförande, IPS 400 och IPS 500, och de är baserade på Volvo Pentas egentutvecklade dieselmotorer D6-310 och D6-370. Systemet i dessa effektklasser lämpar sig för båtar i storleksklassen 35-50 fot.
