Volvo Penta IPS is the revolutionary, new inboard concept with twin counter-rotating and forward-facing propellers on steerable drive units. This concept delivers dramatically improved efficiency compared to inboard shafts providing better performance, lower fuel consumption and reduced emissions. Onboard comfort is also greatly enhanced thanks to exhaust emitted through the drive units under the hull; virtually eliminating noise and vibration.
Now with V8 gasoline power
Until now, all Volvo Penta IPS power options have been diesel based, but now Volvo Penta is introducing a gasoline model. The Volvo Penta IPS500G is powered by a big-block 8.1 litre V8 with multi-port electronic fuel injection developing 375 hp. The drive unit is the same as on existing diesel models, with a new, optimized, gear ratio.
“Performance is great! We have conducted a series of tests on different boats and performance is equal to the diesel powered Volvo Penta IPS500, which means that it is approximately 30 percent more efficient than traditional gas powered inboard shafts,” says Martin Jufors, program manager at Volvo Penta North America. “Onboard comfort characteristics are equally improved. The noise level is reduced versus traditional gas inboards. Diesel powered Volvo Penta IPS set a new industry standard for sound and emissions levels, and now Volvo Penta IPS500G will set new standards for gas inboard power. Vibration levels are low and there is no exhaust smell since exhaust is emitted through the drive units, into the propwash and carried well behind the boat.”
Joystick for effortless docking and precise manoeuvring
With Volvo Penta IPS Joystick, manoeuvring is completely intuitive, the driver just pushes the joystick in the direction desired and the boat responds: forward, reverse, sideways, or spin the boat on its own axis. Volvo Penta IPS Joystick uses the engine and drive units in programmed synchronization to perform any manoeuvre the operator desires. All without thrusters. Joystick is a standard feature on the new Volvo Penta IPS500G.
Any type of planing boat
Since the introduction of Volvo Penta IPS, drive units are quickly becoming the standard for planing boats over 30 feet. The new Volvo Penta IPS500G will be installed in many types of boats.

The Volvo Penta IPS500G is very compact, installed far aft in the boat, leaving maximum space for living or storage.”
Electronic shift and throttle
Volvo Penta’s EVC/EC-system – Electronic Vessel Control with electronic shift and throttle was originally developed for the demanding diesel market and is now available for gasoline V8 engines. This is a CAN-bus based system developed for marine demands with electronic shift and throttle standard. Other features include optional trip computer functionality, automatic powertrim, and high integrity information transmitted via gauge and/or digital readouts. The technology is integral to the new Volvo Penta IPS500G.
