PTC names power packs in honor of Volvo Penta

Volvo Penta engines are such a key part of PTC’s products that the French manufacturer honors them in its hydraulic power packs.

French-based PTC and Volvo Penta have been collaborating for more than 50 years and have strengthened their relationship with the creation of several hydraulic power packs, including the PTC 650VO.

The power pack is used for pile driving rigs (known as Vibrodrivers), and insofar as the ‘650’ refers to the available hydraulic oil flow, the ‘VO’ stands for Volvo.

“The diesel engine is such a crucial component that the name of our power packs include the brand of the engine,” says Mathieu Jehanno, PTC’s chief technical officer.

“We renewed our power pack range due to new emissions regulations, and after a lot of research into solutions, we decided to move forwards with Volvo Penta.”

“For PTC, it was crucial to have suitable diesel engines for Stage IV and Stage III emissions levels, for highly regulated and non-regulated markets, and to be able to set those engines in the same canopy and preserve the volume of production.”

He adds: “We like that Volvo Penta rapidly seeks the best solution to strict emissions standards. It benefits us and helps us keep on top of the market. Their technological expertise along with ours, is a good match.”

PTC (part of the Fayat Group) makes Vibrodrivers, soil improvement equipment, and power packs. Its vibratory hammers produce vertical vibrations that can be applied to pile driving operations for sheet, tubes, concrete, wood, casings and beams. The Vibrodrivers are used free-hanging with cranes or set on rigs, and are suitable for both on- and off-shore use.

PTC uses Volvo Penta engines in three of its power packs, including the Stage IV/Tier 4 Final-compliant TAD 1375 VE in the 650VO.

A niche market requires niche solutions
Jehanno says that the integrated design and wiring elements of Volvo Penta’s engines help reduce installation times into PTC products, therefore increasing productivity.

He adds: “Other key factors for us were their worldwide aftermarket network, a reasonable cost for after-treatment technology, delivery times and ease of integration.

“We operate in a niche market, globally, so we have many demands to face, and need to be able to fulfil our customers’ requests.

“For us, Volvo Penta is always smart and efficient, and we will continue to develop more power packs with them.”
