Senior Immigration Specialist

IMS is a truly global team providing international mobility services and solutions to Volvo Group. We serve as business advisors and provide global mobility related administration and expertise for long and short-term international assignments, and consultative advice for other cross border arrangement such as Foreign Local Hires. We have colleagues located in EMEA, Americas and APAC regions.

IMS is happy to announce that we are hiring a US Immigration Specialist. In this role, you will help support our US immigration program, working with HR Business Partners, Talent Acquisition, and business stakeholders to advise and support the immigration requirements of our employees. You will be a trusted partner to mobility stakeholders, employees, and managers.

Your main areas of responsibility will include (but are not limited to):
  • Serve as primary liaison between employees, outside legal counsel, and key internal stakeholders on all immigration matters & USCIS site visit protocols.
  • Serve as a subject-matter expert (SME) to HR Community and other audiences on the current state of the US immigration system, processes, policies, and regulations.
  • Educate managers and business partners on US immigration policies and processes
  • Drive consistent interpretation and application of governmental immigration requirements and guidelines across all Volvo Group US businesses, partnering with other functions such as HR Center of Expertise (CoE) as necessary.
  • Ensure timely and compliant maintenance of all immigration statuses for sponsored individuals by collaborating with internal stakeholders and external vendors (i.e., prioritizing and managing immigration timelines, including renewals, expiration dates, and the H-1B Lottery, etc.)
  • Adjudicate green card requests in accordance with the sponsorship policy focused on the company’s strategic direction and key needs of the business
  • Manage timely responses to all immigration audits, requests for evidence, etc. acting as the intermediary between the business and external legal counsel/vendor
  • Provide guidance during the pre-hire process by conducting viability assessment of candidate visa sponsorship and long-term employment options in the US
  • Support in the continuous development of our immigration policies/guidelines and processes to ensure compliance and improve employee and stakeholder experience
  • Initiate and execute activities focused on continuous improvement and increased efficiency in the various immigration processes together with appropriate stakeholders and vendors.
  • Coordinate regular learning sessions, including webinars, ad-hoc immigration updates/communications for our foreign national population, management, HR Business Partners, and Talent Acquisition team for continued education, understanding, and compliance
  • Stay current with relevant laws, regulations and procedures governing US immigration. Continuously increase your own expertise through training, utilizing available sources and networking.

You are comfortable with robust debates of ideas between business unit leaders with the ability to synthesize and facilitate a common understanding of the issues and best options. You have the ability to influence stakeholders with divergent views towards alignment is critical to success in the role. The position requires you to be organized, analytical and able to translate complex issues into practical operational activities. To be successful you need to be highly collaborative as you work closely with both internal colleagues and external partners at all levels of the organization from different parts of the world.

Qualifications required to be successful are:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration / Immigration Studies or a related field with relevant experience
  • 5-7 years of high-volume business immigration experience with heavy emphasis on consultative services and program management
  • Excellent analytical skills and attention to detail – ability to review data, detect and correct errors and take responsibility for data quality
  • Excellent communication skills with ability to explain complex issues in a simple and clear manner.
  • Experience identifying and resolving complex issues, assuming a leadership role in unfamiliar or ambiguous circumstances – solid sense of accountability and sound personal judgment
  • Experience working in a large, global organization with a highly matrixed structure
  • In depth knowledge of legal terminology and principles
