“Past and present come together at the 2019 edition of the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show. The same year the show opened its gates for the first time in 1959, Volvo Penta also introduced the Aquamatic sterndrive which would pave the way for decades of innovations to follow – such as the DuoProp, Volvo Penta IPS, Joystick, Forward Drive and much more,” said Ron Huibers, president and CEO of Volvo Penta of the Americas. “Much has changed over the years for both the show and our lineup of solutions, but a common thread still shines through: a commitment to surpassing customer expectations. And that’s the aim of the new products that will be on display this year in the Volvo Penta booth.”
New D4 and D6 Engines Make U.S. Debut
Recently earning the distinguished IBEX Innovation Award, the D4 and D6 propulsion systems have been re-engineered with redesigned engines, new sterndrive, updated IPS drive and a new Electronic Vessel Control (EVC) platform. The end result is a fully integrated package that delivers the ultimate boating experience.
The new system will be on public display for the first time in the U.S. in the FLIBS engine tent, booth 1203, as well as in several boats on the show docks in partnership with Volvo Penta’s global OEMs.
Maintenance Made Easy
Part of the newly launched propulsion package was the second generation of Electronic Vessel Control (EVC2). A key feature for the end-user is the On-Board Maintenance Assistant, which provides users with service dates, as well as the ability to keep track of past servicing and diagnostic information such as oil levels in engine and IPS, right from the Glass Cockpit display.
“This is a perfect demonstration of our how our product innovations reflect our Easy Boating vision,” said Huibers. “Checking the dipstick is a task that many find tedious and messy. Now, boaters can monitor oil from the comfort of the helm.”
Big Things Ahead
At FLIBS Volvo Penta will showcase its powerful 1,000 hp D13 with matching IPS1350 for larger yachts, and Seven Marine’s high-performance outboards integrated with Volvo Penta DuoProps and EVC.
Volvo Penta executives will also be on hand during the boat show to discuss the exciting initiatives in automation, connectivity and electromobility that are under development. Volvo Penta recently unveiled a new take on its Saildrive system – an electric Saildrive prototype. Offering the prospect of onboard comfort, near-soundless, low-vibration operation and silent mooring, the initiative is a collaboration with long-term boat building partner, Fountaine Pajot.
