Thesis Work - Knock control of low or carbon free fuel combustion

Thesis Work - Knock control of low or carbon free fuel combustion

Background of thesis project:
·Volvo Penta works towards science-based targets to reduce emissions and the global carbon footprint. Fuels with lesser or zero carbon compounds which can combust with similar thermodynamics as diesel or gasoline are becoming increasingly popular.
·There is a need to develop high performance combustion engines which can be run on alternative fuels to lower emissions.
·Volatile fuels such as hydrogen and natural gas require advanced engine control methods to reduce engine knocking, backfiring and increase combustion efficiency.
·The possibility to test engine software together with engine models in simulations enables fast evaluation of control strategies and reduces engine testing hours in rig.

Suitable background
•Master students in Controls, Engineering Physics, Mechanical engineering, or related fields
•Proficient programming skills in Matlab/Simulink
•Good knowledge of linear, non-linear and predictive controls is required
•Prior experience with machine learning, neural networks, system identification and/or engine combustion theory is meritorious.
•Ability to drive the work forward by being proactive, curious and persistent.

Description of thesis work
Develop control strategies and optimize performance in simulations to reduce knock for alternative fuel combustion engines.
The work should be divided into four steps:
·Literature study to find existing solutions for the problem within and outside the Volvo Group. Study engine combustion and identify control objectives and available actuators.
·Create simulation model for software control and optimization and continue combustion model development.
·Develop controller by choosing suitable strategy, controller states, cost functions etc.
·Evaluate results to suggest an optimal combustion controller and analyze the reduction in emissions compared to existing solutions on the market.
