Government Sales Manager

Volvo Penta is responsible for the sales of an entire range of marine engines—both leisure and commercial, to our OEMs and boatbuilders within the North America.

We are now looking for Government Sales Manager to join our amazing Marine Diesel Sales team headquartered in Chesapeake, Virginia. Due to the proximity and concentration of Governmental Agencies and prospects, this position is ideally located in Virginia, but it is open for remote locations.

What is the Job?
As a Government Sales Manager, you will be responsible for the lead role focused on all activities related to Government customer engagement, specifically focused on maritime-related boat building and service life extension programs with the US Navy, Coast Guard, Army, US Maritime Administration, NOAA, any Foreign North American and Central American Governmental Agencies, and large municipality/city marine procurement programs.
This is an independent contributor role in which you will work with a matrixed team of regional sales representatives and operational support staff. You will work to develop and maintain a multi-year pipeline of boat building related opportunities, develop and oversee implementation of bid capture strategies, proposal approaches, technical solutions, and assist our regional Power Centers in the proposal processes for RFI/RFQ/RFP/BAA (RFx) and IDIQ Contracts.

Coordinate with regional boat builders and business partners to close new Governmental marine engine business. Lead efforts to improve RFx responses, pre-RFx customer visits, product education events, uncovering program requirements, Industry events and trade shows, and unsolicited proposal initiatives.

To be successful in this role, you will need exceptional business acumen that encompasses overall knowledge of governmental sales, finance, marketing, and advertising and promotions. We would also like for you to have familiarity with engineering, manufacturing, parts, service support, and inventory control. Being well-versed in the diesel marine industry with a particular focus on governmental activities. In addition, excellent communication and presentation skills are necessary as is the need for fluency in speaking and writing English in order to communicate successfully with internal and external stakeholders at different levels of the organization locally, nationally, and globally.

As you will be out and about traveling for this position, being internet savvy is greatly required as are better-than-beginner skills in Microsoft Office programs such as Excel, Word, Power Point, and Outlook.

Education & Experience:
This position requires the following:

  • A 4-year Bachelor’s degree in Business, Engineering, or related field;.
  • 10+ years’ experience in selling/sales in the Governmental arena, preferably marine focused.
  • Experience with diesel marine engines company/boat builders.
  • This position requires that the candidate selected must be a US Citizen
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish), a plus
