Acoustic Metamaterials for Flow Open Systems

The increased demand for cooling with new technologies in the automotive sector associated with new propulsion technologies had as drawback an increased demand for fan performance.
As a result, the noise level due to the high-speed fans have increased, reaching levels that can cause disturbance for the customer and the environment.
The control of the noise at the source is complex and generally impact the component performance in a tradeoff that is hard to manage.

In this case, passive noise control methods can be used. These methods work in the path between the noise source and receiver, but this is currently made with noise barriers which cannot be used in such application since a blockage of the air flow occur.
To overcome this issue, metamaterials seem to be a good solution. Such materials are composed of unique single units that are designed to meet the requirements and the combination of such single units will form the complete component.

The metamaterial to be studied in this thesis will allow airflow through it but will reduce the noise transferred to the environment. A schematic concept is presented below.

Description of the Work

The following activities are expected:
  • Literature survey of metamaterial concepts and theories
  • Design of different cells for metamaterials using a CAD tool in COMSOL
  • Evaluation and parametric modelling of the acoustic performance using COMSOL
  • Simulation of the flow, pressure drop evaluation for acoustic metamaterial using COMSOL or Star-CCM+
  • If time allows, build prototypes and perform acoustic evaluation at the acoustic laboratory of Volvo Group.

Qualifications
  • Prerequisites: acoustics or fluid dynamics, knowing COMSOL or Star-CCM+ (if not, one is expected to be open for learning the tools quickly).
  • Organized and self-driven
  • Group size: 1-2 students

Language
The work will be performed in English

Starts
2023/2024: an early start is favored.
