Transport research center in China

China Academy of Transport Sciences and Volvo Research and Educational Foundations inaugurate transport research center in China.
China Academy of Transport Sciences (CATS) and Volvo Research and Educational Foundations (VREF) today inaugurate the China Sustainable Urban Transport Research Center (CUSTReC) in Beijing, China.

CUSTReC is one of six globally distributed Centers of Excellence (CoE) funded by VREF. The objective of CUSTReC is to establish an international platform for demonstrating the results and exchanging the experiences, and to provide essential and innovative transport solutions for improving the accessibility, safety, efficiency of urban transport and the environmental sustainability. It is also supposed to provide the capacity to conduct research and training activities that lead to the adoption and implementation of sustainable transport policies.

The financial funding of VREF focuses on the research of future urban transports, which is aimed to help solving series of problems in the development of urban transport systems in big cities. China, the largest developing country in the world, has an urgent task for the transport sector to strengthen the capacity in scientific studies and researches so as to maintain its rapid, healthy and sustainable development.
In connection with the inauguration of CUSTReC, there will be an EU-China Workshop on Sustainable Urban Transport with the support of the European Commission on May 27-28 in Beijing.

Established in 1987, Volvo Research and Education Foundations sponsor technical research and educational initiatives in the areas of transport, environment and energy with focus on future urban transport. The scale of the funding for each Center of Excellence is 3.5 million - 4 million USD and the research period is normally 3-5 years.
